2-D or 2-dimensional bar codes are in the form of symbols and are designed to increase the data capacity beyond that of linear barcode symbols, whilst still being readable by optical means.
Two categories of two-dimensional (2D) data carriers exist, multi-row (or stacked) barcodes and matrix codes.
Multi-row 2D barcodes are a series of linear barcode symbols stacked directly, one on top of the other, in a rectangular block or blocks, but containing a continuous message.
Matrix codes are a second and separate class of two-dimensional code. They consist of a block of cells which are filled or unfilled to represent binary data, using a contrasting colour to distinguish the filled cells.
