At the heart of any bar coding solution, is the bar code reader. The bar code reader itself may be of a different design, however all bar code readers perform two distinct functions - to capture the bar-space pattern and to decode the pattern, thus reproducing the original data.
The bar code reader will generally use a light source whose frequency is such that it can be seen with the naked eye. This assists the aiming or guiding process of the bar code reader and allows colour to be introduced into the printed bar code.
