Here are two example of how a mobile device might be used:

Food hygiene

The mobile computer gives details of the work, including the address and the aim of the inspection. The operator can input information such as arrival at the correct destination and the areas inspected. He can also note down any actions required (such as failure to comply with specific regulations and the need to send documentation such as training leaflets or general food safety information).

Pest control

The operator can enter details of any special risks involved to himself (including the need for specialist equipment); to other people; or to the environment. He can say whether or not the job can be safely completed and can make notes on his progress. He can set a date for a revisit if required. The mobile computer can also be used to enter the cost and payment details and any additional information or recommendations.

Blackburn Borough Council need a rugged PDA with a battery life of more than six hours and excellent screen visibility and selected the M3 Rugged PDA.

Newcastle City Council. Its Environment and Regeneration Directorate has invested in Motorola MC35 Enterprise Digital Assistants. These work on a message-based system that sends, receives, deletes and updates jobs in real time. Job requirements are collected by the directorate’s call centre and then allocated to operatives via the Works Management System which then dispatches them to the hand held units.

Oldham Council uses the Gotive H42 Wireless Enterprise Communicators for street surveyors who had been
carrying out surveys using paper documents. As a result,
the information had to be typed up in the office afterwards.

Wakefield and District Housing wanted greater control over its many mobile devices, it selected MobiControl, a mobile device management solution developed by SOTI Inc.
