There are many different barcode symbologies in use - many of these are very specialist and used only in specific markets.
Some of the most popular barcoding symbologies are listed below.
1D barcodes including:
Bar code 3 of 9, Code 39, 93, 128, Codebar, EAN, Interleaved 2 of 5, ISBN, stacked linear (PDF417, Code 16K, Code 49), UPC, BC412, Micro PDF, Postnet, ISBT, telepen and MSI.
2D barcodes including:
2-D or 2-dimensional bar codes are in the form of symbols and are designed to increase the data capacity beyond that of linear barcode symbols, whilst still being readable by optical means.
Two categories of two-dimensional (2D) data carriers exist, multi-row (or stacked) barcodes and matrix codes.
Multi-row 2D barcodes are a series of linear barcode symbols stacked directly, one on top of the other, in a rectangular block or blocks, but containing a continuous message.
Matrix codes are a second and separate class of two-dimensional code. They consist of a block of cells which are filled or unfilled to represent binary data, using a contrasting colour to distinguish the filled cells.
2-D barcodes include: Aztec, Datamatrix, Maxicode, PDF417 and the Postal Codes (Australian 4 state code, Postenet, RM4SCC).
