A WLAN enables a mobile user to connect to a local area network through a wireless radio connection. There are a range of standards which specify the technology for WLAN, including 802.11 a, b and g. High speed WLAN networks are now widely available and can be implemented quickly and at low cost. A wireless networking infrastructure (access points, switches and hubs) is also required. For more information click here.

Prior to the implementation of your wireless mobile computing solution, it is important to undertake a Wireless Site Survey, to determine the location and number of your wireless access points. Regular WLAN system health checks are also recommended, to ensure that the wireless infrastructure is operating at optimal performance. This is particularly important if the physical layout of premises changes.

Security can be an issue with WLANs, which can face potential security threats from eavesdropping, spoofing, free-loading, denial of service and rogue WLAN. Spirit can offer suggestions on how to protect your WLAN to make it more difficult to gain unauthorised access.
